<h2>Answering the Call</h2>
<p>Following Missouri’s legalization of medical marijuana cultivation by ballot initiative in 2018, <a href="/partners" aria-label="local space planning consultants">Spacesaver’s local consultant</a> kept a close eye on regulatory developments. As soon as a list of approved cultivators was released in late 2020, the consultant began calling new licensees to help add efficient systems to their operation. One of those calls connected Spacesaver with Matt Holland, Cultivation Director for Bloom Medicinals. </p>

<h2>Integration Lighting, Water, Air Flow &amp; More</h2>
<p>Bloom Medicinals was familiar with competitors’ aluminum-based products and knew their carriages should be made of a more durable material like steel. Coming from a facility that operated with a single tier grow platform, Bloom’s cultivators had concerns about potential challenges – lighting, drainage, fertigation, and cost – but were open to learning more about the benefits of Spacesaver’s multi-tier GROW system. Knowing this, Spacesaver’s consultant took the time to walkthrough the versatile features and benefits of the <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/vertical-grow-mobile-system" aria-label="grow mobile system product details">GROW mobile system</a> and put Bloom’s team at ease.</p>

Understand your options. 

<h2>Maximizing Canopy with Careful Configuration</h2>
<p>The state of Missouri limits canopy area at 30,000 SF, which was a major consideration in designing the layout of storage systems. Throughout the built-out portion of the facility, rooms are all approximately 30’ x 40’ with 16’ ceilings. Not an issue until you factor in that three of these rooms have structural columns located in different sections of the room, eliminating the possibility of a replicable layout in each room. </p>



Able to accommodate most floorplans, Spacesaver’s mobile and static shelving is designed to deliver greater efficiency to your space.

<h2>From Flowering Room to Drying Room</h2>
<p>In some rooms the racks go different directions due to the column placement, causing the available canopy size to differ dramatically from room to room (1550 SF to 1200 SF depending on column number and placement). Knowing this, our consultant strategically adjusted the design of the systems to fit the space. Accomplishing this while respecting the health and safety of both parties’ team members and state regulations, led our consultant to finalize the details of the whole project online, while coordinating appointments with the architect and installers to take measurements.</p>
<p>As they are also drying plants in the facility, Bloom is utilizing a <a href="/products/specialty-storage/cannabis-drying-system" aria-label="grow drying system product details">Spacesaver drying system</a> including a mobile cart and one 12’-tall rack system. While it is a substantial size, it only covers one tenth of the drying area. As they continue to develop their process and expand further into their facility, they plan to add to the drying system to increase efficiency and yield.</p>

<h2>Preparing for the Next Tier of Growth</h2>
<p>After diligently working through the process with all parties, our consultant was able to optimize space and maximize Bloom’s canopy by pairing <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/vertical-grow-mobile-system" aria-label="vertical grow mobile system product details">two-tiered GROW mobile systems</a> with Hawthorne trays and Gavita lighting systems. </p>

<p>Now that they have been able to establish processes and become fully operational with plants in all their current spaces – encompassing approximately 8,000 SF of canopy – Bloom Medicinals is looking to expand its operation and develop additional ways to increase its impact in the greater Kansas City area.</p>

Vertical Grow Racks for Optimized Yield

<h2>Designing a new cannabis cultivation facility requires foresight, research, and attention to detail. </h2>
<p>Ari Castro, a former Amazon operations manager, and Joshua King, an artist and technician, took a data-driven approach when they converted a Sacramento warehouse into a modern cannabis grow. The nearby Spacesaver consultant teamed up with them, Spacesaver’s engineering team, and Hawthorne Gardening Company to design a complete <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/vertical-grow-mobile-system" aria-label="grow mobile sytem produc details"
>GROW Mobile System</a> that tripled the canopy area and conserved resources.</p>
<p>Like many retrofits, the warehouse posed unique architectural constraints. The planning team had to work around them while trying to optimize the canopy area. They also wanted to limit resource use, not only by drawing less power, but also by choosing products that would have a long lifecycle. Last but not least, they wanted to create a safe working environment in the seismically active area.</p>

Converting a Warehouse to a State-of-the-Art Cannabis Grow

<h3>Optimizing Canopy</h3>
<p>“Like most growers, our goal was to maximize every cubic inch,” Joshua said. They knew they wanted to explore options for growing more plants in the space.</p>



<h3>Creating a Safe Workplace</h3>
<p>Creating a safe and comfortable work environment was another top priority. Given that California is a seismically active area, the planning team wanted to build out the facility in a way that <a href="/blog/seismic-storage-basics" aria-label="seismic storage basics"
>ensured employees would be safe in case of an earthquake</a>.</p>



<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0;">Conserving Resources</h3>
<p style="margin-top: 0;">Cannabis grows are notorious for drawing lots of energy, and the planning team decided to go with LED lights to improve efficiency. That opened up the possibility of using <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/vertical-grow-mobile-system" aria-label="vertical grow mobile sytem product details"
>mobile vertical racking</a>, because LED lights take up less space. The racking, in turn, would allow them to design rooms that would grow more plants in the climate-controlled spaces, which would result in even more energy efficiency.</p>
<p>They also took product life-cycle into account when evaluating vertical racking and other products. That’s because they knew it made more sense from a resource standpoint to choose products that would last for decades instead of needing to be replaced after a few years.</p>

<p style="margin-top: 0;">The design team needed to work around existing architectural constraints and code requirements.</p>

<p>The planning team wanted to create the most efficient system possible, given the constraints posed by the warehouse. “Everything had to be designed with an eye toward ease of use, accessibility, optimization, and efficiency, as well as aesthetics,” Joshua said. Because the choice of racking would have a cascading effect on other decisions, they researched the racking first.</p>
<h3>Choosing a Vertical Grow Rack System</h3>
<p>Cannabis racking was a big investment, so the planning team thoroughly investigated their options. “We put a lot of time and effort into researching the data behind these products,” Joshua said. “We wanted to be sure we were making the right decision.”</p>

<p>They narrowed down their options to Spacesaver and two other manufacturers. The Bay-area Spacesaver consultant took them to visit grows fitted with <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/vertical-grow-mobile-system" aria-label="vertical grow mobile system product details"
>Spacesaver GROW Mobile Systems</a>, and they toured facilities to see and use the other two manufacturers’ racking as well.</p>
<p>After comparing the top three manufacturers, the choice was clear: they decided to go with Spacesaver. “We saw Spacesaver had a lower profile, everything was powder-coated inside and out, and the crank set, the axle, everything was enclosed,” Joshua said. “It was a no-brainer.”</p>

<h2 style="text-align:center;">Racking Design &amp; Installation</h2>
<p style="text-align:center;">The Spacesaver consultant designed a GROW Mobile System that fit perfectly into the room and accommodated code requirements. Anti-tip rails and locking handles would help ensure employee safety. After the system was designed and manufactured, the local, factory-certified crew worked efficiently to install the system and train staff on its operation.</p>

<h2>A Complete Solution</h2>
<p>After the <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/vertical-grow-mobile-system" aria-label="vertical grow mobile system product details"
>vertical grow rack system</a> was in place, the rest of the components for the growing system started coming together. Due to the integration of Spacesaver’s racking with products from Hawthorne Gardening Company, the planning team decided on Gavita lighting, Hawthorne trays and irrigation, and mobile-compatible ventilation systems. Spacesaver and Hawthorne collaborate on product design to create easy-to-use integrations for lighting, trays, and other components. </p>

<h2>A Safe, Sustainable, and Efficient Grow</h2>
<p>All the research and planning has paid off. Not only is the Presidential Garden Group team growing 278% more canopy than they would have with single tables; they also have the satisfaction of knowing they’re using less energy and have purchased a safe, sturdy, and reliable system that will last for years.</p>
<p>In addition to cultivating, processing, and curing flower, Presidential Garden Group also serves as a resource for other growers in the area: the team gives tours to growers who are planning their own facilities. “Growing cannabis is a young science, and we all have a lot to learn,” Ari said. “We’re proud to be doing this in a responsible, sustainable way.”</p>

<h2>The Best of Both Worlds</h2>
<p>When Chris Durbin set out to design a cutting-edge medical cannabis grow, he wanted to combine the best features of greenhouses and indoor cannabis grows. “My grandpa was a botanist and I grew up in greenhouses, learning from him,” Durbin said. “It was definitely hands-on and applied.”</p>
<p>Later, as he gained experience growing medical cannabis indoors, he came to appreciate the reliable and consistent product he could produce in the highly controlled environment of indoor grows.</p>
<p>He resolved that when the right opportunity came along, he would build an indoor grow that blended his knowledge of large-scale, indoor horticulture with the appreciation for natural processes that he gained in the greenhouse.</p>

<h2>Designing the Medical Cannabis Facility Layout</h2>
<p>The team acquired an 80-year-old building and set out to convert it to a modern cannabis grow. It wasn’t an easy task. “We designed around the building and did a lot of retrofitting,” Durbin said. “Our entire layout was design compromises.”</p>


<h3>Maximizing Yields</h3>
<p>The facility build-out resulted in nine rooms, with eight rooms devoted to flowering and one devoted to mother plants and propagation. Space in all the rooms was tight, with about 12 feet in width, 40 feet in length, and varying ceiling heights.</p>
<p>Durbin knew he needed to maximize the facility’s grow area to produce the highest yields. He would be heating and cooling the rooms regardless of how many plants were growing in them, and he didn’t want to waste space. “This is the most competitive cannabis market in the world,” he said. “There’s no margin for error.”</p>

<h2>Rolling Tables x4</h2>
<p>Durbin had been seeking ways to make the most efficient use of available space throughout his career, and he planned to install rolling tables in the new facility. As he researched the best brands, he came across the concept of <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/vertical-grow-mobile-system" aria-label="mobile vertical racking product details"
>mobile vertical racking</a>, or vertical farming.</p>
<p>He understood the potential right away: he could take the space-saving concept of rolling tables and multiply its effect by going vertical. After doing more research, he knew he wanted to invest in the best system on the market. “I wanted a vertical racking system and I wanted to grow on four levels, so I needed something really robust,” he said.</p>

<p>He got a quote from a manufacturer but felt uneasy about the product and the company’s commitment to customer service. He continued his research by talking to the firm’s clients around the state, and he soon realized the system wouldn’t be sufficient for his needs. He was concerned about durability and safety, so he kept looking.</p>


<h3>Made in America</h3>
<p>An acquaintance recommended <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/vertical-grow-mobile-system" aria-label="grow mobile system prdocut details">Spacesaver’s GROW Mobile System</a>, and Durbin sought drawings and a quote from the cannabis consultant at Spacesaver’s Tualatin-based distributorship. He liked the fact that the distributorship was close by, with a dedicated sales and support team and factory-certified technicians always at the ready.</p>
<p>“I did my own homework, and I felt good about the relationship I had with the Spacesaver consultant,” Durbin said. “Even though Spacesaver’s quote was higher, we decided it would be the smartest investment.”</p>



<h2>The Result</h2>
<p>The Spacesaver installation team installed the GROW Mobile System in two rooms as a trial. They trained staff on its use and Durbin incorporated lighting, irrigation, and custom inserts that he commissioned from a local fabrication shop.</p>
<p>Without revealing his trade secrets, Durbin said the <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/vertical-grow-mobile-system" aria-label="grow system product details">Spacesaver GROW system</a> integrates perfectly with his unique approach to growing medical cannabis. “It’s a very intense cultivation style, with high plant density,” he said. “We have four levels and we’re using every inch.”</p>

<p>After the successful trial run, Durbin ordered more Spacesaver vertical farming systems for the rest of the medical cannabis grow. He said he and his team are pleased with the system’s strength, ease of use and reliability. “The Spacesaver racks work very well, and they save a ton of space,” he said.</p>

GROW Mobile System Guide 

<h2>A Limiting License</h2>
<p>When Korff and architect Jeremy Schlicher began conceptualizing the facility’s design, their thoughts were focused on a simple fact: the state-issued cultivation license limited the grow area to 3,000 square feet. “The challenge in this state is to maximize the utility of the space,” Korff said. “Using the square footage allotment that we had in the most efficient way possible was a top priority.”</p>
<p>The solution was two-fold: first, Korff wanted to use mobile benching to optimize the grow rooms’ square footage. Then he wanted to go vertical to maximize the volume. Growing on multiple tiers of mobile benching would allow the facility to quadruple its canopy area.</p>

<h2>Mobile Vertical Grow Racks Optimize Space</h2>
<p>After talking with multiple mobile vertical grow rack vendors, the design team opted to design the cannabis cultivation facility with <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/vertical-grow-mobile-system" aria-label="grow mobile system product details">Spacesaver’s GROW Mobile Systems</a> in each of its two grow rooms. Each system consists of 20-foot-tall widespan shelving mounted on 50-foot-long <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/heavy-duty-mobile-racking" aria-label="heavy-duty mobile systme product details"

<p>After the design was finalized, the team embarked on a complex construction process. Due to the Spacesaver systems’ size, components had to be delivered and stored inside the cultivation area before the facility was actually built. “Having Spacesaver involved early on helped the general contractor work the racking into the construction process,” Schlicher said. “In addition to having the rails installed in the floor when the concrete was poured, we also needed to store components inside the space before it was constructed. Tiering the delivery of materials was very important.”</p>

<h3>4X the Grow Area</h3>
<p>When compared to stationary 4×8 tables, <a  href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/vertical-grow-mobile-system" aria-label="grow mobile system product details">Spacesaver’s GROW Mobile System</a> quadrupled the grow area in the facility’s 3,000 square feet of cultivation space.</p>
<p>The two grow rooms started with 18 tables = 576 sqft. of canopy and now has 72 tables = 2600 sqft. of canopy.</p>

<p>The local Spacesaver consultant provided valuable insight throughout the entire process, starting with early design conversations and continuing through installing the <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/vertical-grow-mobile-system" aria-label="grow shelving product details">mobile vertical grow rack systems</a>, staff training, and long-term maintenance. “The Spacesaver team was helpful in developing more budget-friendly alternatives without losing primary function, like manual operation versus electronic, for instance,” Schlicher said. “Then there was a lot of back and forth, sending floorplans, getting technical details from them and talking with the structural engineer.”</p>
<p>As with any complex project, Spacesaver’s participation in the early planning stages helped the entire process run more smoothly. “Choosing your partners is really critical to the design and build of these operations,” Korff said. Having Spacesaver on board made the process much simpler. They were far and away one of the best vendors we chose to work with.”</p>

<p>Beyond real estate expenses, the growers have to keep the air inside the building controlled for temperature and humidity. The larger the facility, the higher the costs, so saving space is important.</p>

<p>The growers' first attempt at saving space involved placing plants on low tables. The aisles were narrow and cramped, and the tables were too wide for the employees to comfortably reach across.</p>
<h5>Two-tier Shelves that Move</h5>
<p>The new commercial grow room setup doubled the growing area and improved working conditions. Two levels of <a href="/products/shelving/grow-vertical-racking" aria-label="widespan vertical racking product details">Spacesaver's wide-span shelving</a> on the ActivRAC® Mobilized Shelving System formed the core of the new floorplan.</p>
<p>The company’s owners worked with the local Spacesaver consultant to design a new grow room floorplan using ActivRAC. The <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/vertical-grow-mobile-system" aria-label="vertical grow mobile system product details">ActivRAC Mobile System</a> consists of shelving or pallet racking mounted on “carriages” that move along rails installed into or on top of the floor.</p>
