Delivering A New Revolution to Industrial

<p>Today’s average car consists of approximately 30,000 parts ranging in size from a ¼ inch-diameter diaphragm to a front frame large and strong enough to support the engine. And, while some car owners may have found a way for their vehicle to function (albeit noisily) without one or more of these 30,000 parts, dealerships must be able to provide each and every one of them at a moment’s notice for their customers.</p>
<p>Here lies the key issue for many, most…well, all dealers: How do they house all these parts in less space, and in a way that allows staff to access them in a timely and efficient manner? One of those dealers in the greater Omaha, Nebraska region decided to bring in some support from their local Spacesaver consultant when building a new facility dedicated to shrinking their parts department’s footprint while expanding its capabilities to provide the right parts for their customers.</p>

<h3>A Diagnostic Functionality Test</h3>
<p>For housing products that help vehicles run, parts storage solutions of the past have been remarkably static. Characterized by numerous aisles of open-faced, fixed shelving storing parts big and small, warehouses were reaching their capacity with each passing year and part added to their respective dealership’s product offering. Not only were they running out  of space due to this influx of products, but staff search time increased due to overcrowding, forcing owners to consider purchasing and developing high-dollar available land to accommodate growth.</p>
<p>For the ownership group at this Omaha dealership chain, expanding their established footprint was not an option. In fact, when the design phase of their new parts warehouse began, they entered the process with a goal of the finished product covering less space than previous buildings. So, having experienced success in utilizing Spacesaver’s systems at another one of their locations, they reached out to their trusted local consultant  to help reduce space and the expenses of new construction from within.</p>
<h3>Servicing the Service Department</h3>
<p>Store a tremendous number of unique parts and materials on a myriad of storage solutions that combine to function as one unit. This was the directive for the new warehouse project. To accomplish this goal through efficient design, our consultant worked with the A&amp;D team, owner’s rep, parts manager, and ownership group to identify what does and doesn’t work with their existing systems. From those conversations, it was determined that they needed to focus on the following solutions to optimize cohesion:</p>

<p>As mentioned, the decades-long industry standard had been to use static aisles. While this pales in comparison to a mobile system in terms of capacity, some staff members had a hard time envisioning how they would be able to access multiple aisles at the same time. To eliminate the occurrence of bottlenecks from individuals needing to access separate aisles, our team installed the High-Density Mobile Shelving units to allow access to two separate aisles at a time. From this, parts team members had access to a larger number of invaluable parts and materials.</p>
<p>Further promoting efficiency and safety, our consultant worked with the general contractor during the design process to facilitate proper power coordination and include a recessed rail layout for the High-Density Mobile Shelving system. In the end, the dealership was able to accomplish its goal of minimizing wasted floor space, increasing capacity, and improving access to thousands of vital vehicle parts.</p>

<p>Military warehouses need to store a variety of items to keep operations running smoothly. This warehouse on a large military base stores parts and equipment for vehicle maintenance, and its inventory includes large and bulky items like tires and radiators as well as smaller parts like oil filters.</p>


<h3><small>The Challenge</small><br>A 20-Year-Old Mobilized Racking System</h3>
<p>To keep inventory organized while also providing convenient access to stored items, a <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-shelving/">Spacesaver mobile racking system</a> was installed in this military warehouse about 20 years ago. The system functioned well over the years, but, similar to the warehouse’s original thermostats and security systems, the mobile racking’s electronic components eventually needed an update. Increase Storage Capacity with Moving Racking

Compact Cold Storage for Food and Beverage

<p>Like many bars and restaurants, Abnormal Beer Co. was hit hard by the COVID crisis. Fortunately, its investment in Spacesaver mobile pallet racking in its cold warehouse paid off by allowing the brewery to quickly make the switch from kegs (used for in-person dining and events) to canned product (used for take-out). The mobile racking system also allowed the company to rent cold warehouse space to other breweries in the area.</p>
<p>Abnormal Beer was San Diego’s first brewery-winery-restaurant and, due to COVID restrictions, it was forced to temporarily close its dine-in operations starting in March 2020. “We skipped a beat for about a month,” said Jeff Milton, who manages logistics for the enterprise. “We had to close the restaurant and we took some time to regroup and think about everything. And then we hit the ground running.” </p>

<h3>Reorganizing Pallet Racking</h3>
<p>The Abnormal brewery had remained in operation during the restaurant’s closure, and staff noticed an interesting trend: as in-person restaurant sales declined, sales of canned beer skyrocketed. The business had purchased its own canning line the previous year, so they fired it up to full capacity and started canning 240 cases per day. “Now we can it instead of keg it,” Milton said.</p>

<p>As of January 2021, the restaurant is open again, albeit with strict limits on capacity, and most of the kitchen staff have returned to work. <h3>The Challenge</h3>

<p>Material Center Operations, the group responsible for materials management
    at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control (MFC) manufacturing facility
    in Orlando, FL, strives for continuous improvement as it aims to help boost
    the plant’s overall efficiency. The department implemented a new strategy
    to ensure fast- and slow-moving production materials came together harmoniously
    as dictated by its Materials Handling Requirements System.</p>
<p>The success of the new approach hinged on the ability to make space for
    storing slow-moving materials work with the flow, not against it. That
    drove the need to bring all slow-moving materials closer to the point of
    use, rather than storing a portion of them off site.</p>
<p>The issue was that the available storage space was inadequate, reduced
    from 4,000 to 3,000 square feet, so storing the slow-moving items on-site
    seemed impossible. And building an addition was out of the question.</p>

    <h3>The Solution</h3>
<p>The local Spacesaver distributor worked with a senior manager at the firm to design an ActivRAC mobilized storage system to match the group’s strategic goals.</p>

<p>The <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-shelving/heavy-duty-mobile-racking/">ActivRAC system</a> makes
    more efficient use of limited storage space when compared with static (stationary)
    pallet racking. Industrial-grade carriages can be equipped with existing
    or new pallet racking, shelving and cabinets. The carriages move side-to-side
    on a carriage-and-rail system, which eliminates the need for an open aisle
    between rows of racking or shelving.</p>
<p>That means there’s no wasted space. Instead, users decide which aisle
    to open to easily access stored materials while remaining aisles stay closed.</p>
    
    <p>Team members use a pallet stacker to access stored materials. A user simply pushes a button on the front of the <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-shelving/heavy-duty-mobile-racking/">ActivRAC carriage</a> to open the desired aisle. Materials can be accessed from either side of the aisle, which expands to a full 12 feet for ample room to maneuver.</p>
<p>Aisles can also be opened by remote control or via an app on a tablet or phone.</p>

        capacity for storing slow-moving materials on-site by 70%, despite the
        substantially smaller area for storage.</li>

        to the point of use contributes to a 15% gain in efficiency, as measured
        by minutes per transaction.</li>
    <li>Improved inventory control: Now that it’s easier to track production materials
