Our systems feature storage units mounted on wheeled carriages that run on tracks set in or on top of the floor, depending on the system used. <h3>Safety & Mobile Storage</h3>
<p>In case of an emergency, safety devices will stop moving high-density mobile carriages. Stop buttons and safety sweeps are easily accessible and clearly marked, and systems equipped with a Zero Force Sensor® system prevent carriage movement when someone is in an aisle and will stop carriage movement when a person enters a closing aisle.</p>
<h3>Mobile Storage Accessibility Considerations</h3>
<p>While there are ADA accessibility guidelines for buildings and facilities that apply specifically to mobile storage, state and municipal laws vary on a case-by-case basis. Our nationwide team of storage consultants are familiar with their local accessibility requirements and can assist you in finalizing your space plans. Some things to consider: </p>
<p><b>Aisles:</b> There are minimum widths and continuous clearances that must be considered for aisles. In library settings, a wider aisle above the minimum is preferred. By eliminating wasted aisle space, our mobile storage solutions can provide your required aisle width in less overall space than stationary shelving.</p>
<p><b>Wheelchair Accessibility:</b> Minimum standards – which can change depending on if space is needed for wheelchair turning (180 degrees) or if a t-shaped space is required for the backing up and turning of the wheelchair – must be determined on an individual basis, depending on the physical limitations of the facility and the person(s) using the storage system. Some factors to consider include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Aisle Length: Some systems may be short enough that a person using a wheelchair can back out of a single-entry aisle with relative ease.</li>
<li>Dual-Access Aisles: Providing access on either end of an aisle may eliminate the need to a turnaround, as people using wheelchairs can simply enter on one end of the aisle and exist through the other end.</li>
<li>Turnaround Aisles: In a mobile system, allowing for a 60” aisle for wheelchair turnaround can also create two 30” aisles for people not using wheelchairs. A Powered High-Density Mobile Storage system can be set to lock with a carriage, making it a stationary platform with an aisle on either side.</li>
</ul>
<p><b>Floor Surfaces:</b> These include ramps and aisle floor services in addition to regular flooring, which need to be firm and slip resistant.</p>
<p><b>Ramps:</b> Ramps are required when there is a change in levels greater than ½”. Our storage team will calculate ramp requirements for each application.</p>
<p><b>Opening Force:</b> Unless a wheelchair is locked, pushing a carriage will exert an equal force that pushes the chair away from the system. For this reason, a powered mobile storage system is the best option, as carriages are easily moved by someone with a touch of a button – a remote-control device can even offer added convenience. </p>
<p><b>Type of Controls & Control Height:</b> Similar to elevator buttons, there is a range of heights from the floor (35”-48”) that is advised for mobile systems. While several control options are available, our team recommends using powered controls, which are the easiest to operate and ensure access to people with almost every type of disability.</p>
<p><b>Signage:</b> Signage on mobile systems designed to provide access for people with disabilities must include instructions for operating the systems as well as the contents of the carriages.</p>

<p>Spacesaver’s High-Density Mobile Shelving systems maximize the capacity for storage by providing movable storage shelves and aisles. <h4>Floor Load Considerations</h4>
<p>The magnitude of a floor-load capacity required will be contingent on what’s being stored. For instance, typical floor requirements for paper files or books will be 125-200 pounds per square foot (psf), while museum applications may require 275-300 psf depending on the number of shelf tiers and type of floor system.</p>
<h4>Rail Flexibility & Placement</h4>
<p>The heaviest floor loads can be distributed through the flexibility of Spacesaver’s rail layout, and there are countless options for distributing these loads by adjusting rail placement and spacing.</p>
<h4>Footprint & Distribution</h4>
<p>For a high-density mobile storage system, the Impact Area Footprint is the combined area of the storage system plus its aisle space. Loads from the shelves of the system are transferred to the carriages, which are transferred to the wheels, then the rails, and ultimately, the structure of the building. Keep in mind that the aisles are subjected to pedestrian loads (15 psf minimum), which must be considered in conjunction with the storage system loads. In terms of rail loads, Spacesaver High-Density Mobile Shelving systems are planned with approximately equal rail loads. However, it’s also possible to develop unequal rail loading if conditions are more advantageous.</p>
<h4>Orientation & Relocation</h4>
<p>When evaluating floor load, initial layouts may yield conditions that don’t meet your specific criteria. Spacesaver’s rail size selections offer a unique ability to be oriented over load-bearing points – so satisfactory loading can be accomplished. When relocating a system of a certain weight to a bay’s allowable load capacity – systems can be repositioned over an adjacent bay and an additional rail can be attached so the weight can be distributed evenly.</p>
<h4>Post-Construction Modifications</h4>
<p>There are several types of structural modifications, supplements, and suspended systems that can be utilized to reinforce the beams and joists that support a high-density mobile storage system. Access drawings of some of the many modifications we’ve seen in the field.</p>
<h4>Structural & Seismic Considerations</h4>
<p>All framed floor systems are subjected to deflection when load is applied to the floor system, and the amount of deflection is proportional to the applied load. Buildings with large bays can have enough deflection to cause a high-density mobile storage system to drift. Spacesaver has developed a patented positioning brake, which will prevent a system from drifting, as well as patented anti-tip systems that meet all code requirements for buildings in areas that are prone to seismic activity.</p>

<p>An earthquake can cause a significant amount of damage to the buildings within its path. When such a catastrophe occurs, it’s important to have storage solutions in place that are not only reliable, but also limit the probability that the occupants of a building will be harmed by falling architectural, mechanical, electrical, and other non-structural components.</p>
<p>Spacesaver’s High-Density Mobile Storage system is built to maintain the safety, security, and stability of its contents, and each of these elements play an important role when developing dependable seismic storage solutions:</p>

<li>Safety: The mobile system’s in-rail anti-tip mechanism combined with seismic rail anchoring, essentially makes the mobile system a part of the building.</li>
<li>Security: Options such as bolting shelving together back-to-back and to the carriage provides structural rigidity, and the systems are rigorously tested to ensure items of all sizes stay put in a seismic situation.</li>
<li>Stability: Reinforced carriage and platform structures as well as special platform anchoring channel provide seismic stability, while a patented recessed integral retaining lip ensures shelf attachment can withstand severe lateral forces.</li>

<h3>Seismic Storage Determination</h3>
<p>A structural engineer is the only person that is qualified to say which characteristics a mobile shelving system should have. Storage systems – particularly mobile storage systems attached to the concrete floor slab – are generally considered to have the same seismic design category as those of the structure they occupy or are attached to.</p>
<p>Our storage consultants work with structural engineers to identify the seismic design category of the building in question and the corresponding design characteristics our solutions need to adhere to. Items such as the rail, anchor plates, end-stops, carriages, and the shelving within the mobile system all are affected by seismic design, and working with Spacesaver offers another level of assurance that the systems are in compliance.</p>
<h3>Planning for Seismic Activity</h3>
<p>Mobile storage is not specifically mentioned in building codes; however, several guidelines can be applied to making the systems safe for seismic areas. States such as California and Alaska might be the most seismically active regions in the United States, but other areas of the country are certainly reinforcing their buildings – and the items in them – for potential earthquakes.</p>
<p>At the Salt Lake City Public Safety Building, Spacesaver mobile storage are used throughout the space. Salt Lake City Deputy Chief Tim Doubt says they worked with a local architecture firm to design the building to withstand a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The department and the firm both collaborated with Spacesaver “to place mobile systems around the struts that keep the building stable,” said Deputy Chief Doubt. “So, we won’t lose power or services – and we’ll be able to operate through the earthquake as well as after it.”</p>

Testing Electric Shelving Systems - Power of Reliability

<p>This Nordic-style spa provides a unique hydrotherapy experience, but the two outdated locker rooms definitely didn’t fit with the vibe of the rest of the property. The old key-operated lockers were a constant source of frustration. Not only were they unsightly, but guests would lose their keys, reducing the spa’s capacity to welcome guests. That in turn resulted in decreased revenue and lost staff time.</p>

<p>Archives and museum collections often store fragile and volatile materials that require flat storage, isolation, and / or special ventilation requirements. For example, early printing processes for diazotypes and blueprints resulted in residual chemicals that are harmful to the prints themselves and to other materials stored in proximity. Recommended preservation storage for these materials often involves separate, protected storage and increased ventilation.</p>


<h3>Flat-File Cabinets with Ventilation</h3>
<p>Spacesaver’s custom engineering and manufacturing capabilities are helping archives staff at a southern California county responsibly store their large collection of historic diazotype maps, plans, and oversized documents. When the design team was working on a new building to house the county’s archives and other offices, archives staff expressed the desire for flat-file cabinets to store and isolate fragile oversized documents without folding or rolling. They also wanted perforations to promote ventilation and increased circulation to prevent further deterioration, but they hadn’t been able to find museum-quality perforated flat-file cabinets on the market.</p>

<h3>Collection Preservation through Storage Solutions</h3>
<p>The design consultant on the project suggested working with Spacesaver’s engineering team to create a solution. They modified Spacesaver’s standard <a href="https://www.spacesaver.com/products/museum-storage-products/archival-flat-file-storage/">flat-file cabinet</a> to create a flat-file cabinet with perforations in the front and back of each drawer, as well as a perforated back panel on the back of the cabinet. The design allows the cabinets to retain their structural integrity while promoting ventilation.</p>

    right from the start. Its state-issued license limited its growing area
    to 3,000 square feet, so the owner worked with the architect and the local
    Spacesaver consultant to create a vertical racking system that eliminated
    wasted aisle space and took full advantage of the facility’s height. Even
    though the business would only need to use two tiers when it first opened,
    the owner planned to add plants on the third tier to keep pace with consumer
