Company History
Spacesaver Corporation was founded in 1972 as a reorganization of an insolvent cabinet firm by Theodore W. Batterman, formerly vice president of industrial sales and marketing for Warner Electric Brake & Clutch Company.

The firm then had seven employees and 10,000 square feet of manufacturing space in an old barn. The mobile products were essentially carriages sold as accessories to shelving.

Batterman saw high-density mobile systems as a product in its own right that could be specified by engineers and architects for new as well as existing construction and would be installed and serviced by local contractors.  He also opened the way to large systems by adding electric motor drives and electronic controls and safety devices to what had been solely hand-propelled units of limited size.

By marketing Spacesaver systems in terms of space and energy conservation and productivity improvement, Batterman took advantage of the triple problems of land and building cost inflation, rising energy costs and productivity decline to create a new industry.  Spacesaver Corporation now has three facilities in Fort Atkinson Wisconsin, still employs one of those original seven employees and has experienced double-digit average sales growth throughout its history.

Batterman was chosen Wisconsin 1985 Small Businessperson of the Year by the Small Business Administration.  The SBA also named him Region V winner for Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota as well as National Second Runner-up, and a delegate to the White House Conference on Small Business.

In May 1988, the company announced its entry into the steel shelving business with the completion of a state-of-the-art automated metal-fabrication facility for 4-post steel shelving.  In October 1988, Spacesaver acquired the Johl Library Shelving line of cantilever design steel shelving from Allsteel, Canada, Ltd.  It now manufactures Cantilever Library Shelving in the United States for North American markets.

In July 1998, Spacesaver was acquired by KI (Krueger International, Inc.).  Spacesaver continues to operate as a standalone division and has maintained its distribution channel separate from KI.  Its product offering has expanded significantly since the acquisition.

In October 1999, Spacesaver Corporation became the first mobile storage systems manufacturer in the United States to achieve ISO 9001 certification.  Although this is a milestone for Spacesaver as a company, it is only one step in the pursuit of excellence through continuous improvement.
